Photography has always been a part of my life. I was raised in a family where art was the centerpiece of focus. My father, Fritz Henle, was a preeminent photographer where travel was the thread of experience that constantly inspired my life. I acquired my first camera from him, a pocket size 35mm at the age of twelve and a twin lens Rolleiflex at age eighteen and ventured on to various other formats as my career unfolded.
I am a wanderer and my love of travel and opening to other cultures has taken me to all parts of the world. Raised in the Caribbean on the island of St. Croix, I grew up in multi-cultural diversity. My work is about witnessing and connecting to that which reveals itself in any moment, be it people, landscape or artifact. I have always been a “straight” photographer with little or no manipulation of imagery, attuning to optimal compositions and lighting, often seeking an abstraction of subject or an irony and ambiguity of a situation. For the past forty years photography has allowed me the immediacy of connection and expression to offer the viewer a window into my world and to different ways of seeing.
